Leon Suber, 87, of Worthington, Ohio made his transition from this life on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 surrounded by his devoted family. Born in Deshler, Ohio, Leon became a vegan at age 12 because of his love for all living things. Leon worked at his family’s business, Deshler Foundry & Machine Works. He graduated from Deshler Village High School in 1940. He then enlisted in the US Army Air Corp and is a World War II Veteran. He received his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 1950 from Toledo University. While attending college, he met the love of his life and soul mate, Shirley A. (Remmert). They married in 1946 and together raised eight children. During their 64 years together, they shared many adventures while traveling the world. Leon was an accomplished chemical engineer who received many awards and acknowledgements for his contributions to developments, research, and inventions at General Motors, Battelle, General Electric Diamond Division, and Rockwell International (Boeing). Leon possessed an entrepreneurial spirit and owned several businesses throughout his life including, The Hullabaloo (Roseville, MI) and The Bonsai Gallery (Columbus, OH). In addition to his professional accomplishments, Leon devoted himself to uplifting others. He had a contagious laugh and always had a smile for everyone. He was lovingly known as “Grandpa” to all he met. He enjoyed gardening and planted seeds of love and forgiveness in the hearts of those who knew him. As a Master Essene, he lived his life on a quest of spiritual growth and guided others along his path. Leon was a life-long learner, avid researcher, and reader. He was a member of the New England Masonic Lodge No. 4. He was also an OSU football fan.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Gertrude (Burk), brother Leo and sister Leola; and son Raymond. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley; three sons, Tom (Ileana), Paul and Wayne (Karen); four daughters, Marcia Snell, Mary (Jim) Eader, Margie (Jeff) Musick and Nancy; daughter-in-law Laura MacElhern; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Leoto (Sloan) and many friends.
Services will be provided by Rutherford Funeral Home, 515 N. High St., Worthington, Ohio.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, June 4, 2010 from 6-8 pm. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 2 pm.
Future internment will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery
